‘I am he’, ‘I am not this’; leave this kind of distinction. Resolving that all this is the Self, drop all desires and expectations and be cheerful.
It is true that the spiritual pursuit commences from discriminating between the real and the unreal, the lasting and fleeting. This apart, our life as well as activities are based upon an assortment of differentiations. We have to discriminate between the inert body and the sentient Self. All this is based upon our senses and their perceptions. But all the sensory objects, we already found, are part of an illusory display, a super-imposition, of and in the Self. Being so, are not all differentiations unsubstantial? In reality, the luminous, infinite Self alone is. What is the point, then, in saying ‘I am young’, ‘I am old’, ‘he is healthy’, ‘I am unhealthy’, ‘I shall die’? None of these is true the least about the Self!
Once your focus is to realize the singular all-pervading Self, clinging to these differentiations is absolutely wrong. It hinders your progress and enlightenment.
What is required is to confidently and resolutely outlive all these differentiations, and focus on the singular, infinite Self, which does not allow any kind of undue differentiation.
Ashtavakra makes it clear that standing firmly on the singular and all-pervading Self, the seeker should completely drop indulgence in differentiations. You may differentiate the body and similar gross objects, but not the ‘I’ or the Self. Equally so, all thoughts and imaginations involving desire and expectation should be dispensed with. Get to the freedom and ecstasy of the Self.
