dṛṣṭvā nirvedam-āpannaḥ ko na śāmyati mānavaḥ .. 9-5..

Having seen the varied views of great ascetic seers, saints and yogis, which person having gained indifference does not achieve quietitude/quiescence?

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Spiritual pursuit directly involves mind and intelligence. Therefore qualities enriching these are paramount in spiritual sādhanā. Cultured indifference is the ultimate enrichment the seeker has to gain. Indifference should be not alone to the perishable world objects and interactions with them. It should equally be to the divergent statements made by seers, ascetics and yogis.

All exponents aim at the Self within the seeker’s own body. Once this becomes clear, all search and quest should come to a stop, and the Self within should be the sole focus. To get at the Self, the mind must be stable and intelligence clear and resolved. Both should not be swayed by variety of views. There should not be any distraction. Unshakeability should be wholesome.

When your intelligence crosses the quagmire of delusion, the craze for reading and listening to more and more expositions also ceases, says Krishna in Bhagavad Gita. When the intelligence is not tossed by whatever is heard, then will one attain yoga (2.52,53 ).

Insatiable fascination for things of the world, even for learning is the last obstruction for the seeker in reaching his goal. Once this is removed, and mind and intelligence become steady, that itself is the state of yoga. When all mental modifications dissolve into their source, the spiritual presence, namely the Self, is revealed!
