Ashtavakra Gita 20.12 -

क्व प्रवृत्तिर्निर्वृत्तिर्वा क्व मुक्ति: क्व च बन्धनम् ।
कूटस्थनिर्विभागस्य स्वस्थस्य मम सर्वदा

kva pravṛttir-nirvṛttir-vā kva muktiḥ kva ca bandhanam .
kūṭastha-nirvibhāgasya svasthasya mama sarvadā ..20-12..

For me the unshakeable and indivisible, resting well in my own sovereign Self, where is active involvement or non-activity? Where is liberation, where can be bondage?

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Janaka has been throughout making affirmation about his unshakeable Self-seatedness. With the same force of insistence he has been equally negating all plural considerations too. Sometimes re-statements with slight moderations are also there – a subtle distinction of effective revelation and teaching!

Knowledge of the Subject, of the ‘I’, is unlike knowledge of objects, which are visible, plural and comparable. Therefore, only on the basis of opposite concepts and findings, the seeker has to approach the inner Subject. This is in a way a contradiction, elusive too, but nonetheless is the only way. Thus negation of all outer, visible, plural phenomena cannot be avoided. Repeated reflection on these affirmations as well as negations will alone empower the mind and intelligence to absorb the instruction, and lead to spiritual quietitude and poise, wherein the Self, the sentient space, will begin to shine with its own splendour.

Pursuing activity aimed at gaining wealth and gratifying desires is the way of the worldly minded. In contrast, withdrawing from such involvement and pursuing a life of contemplation is the wont of the dispassionate. Janaka says both are irrelevant for him, for, he is unshakeably resting on the immovable, impersonal Self. Comfort, contentment and fulfilment secular people aim at, he has in ample measure from the Self. He has no bondage, hence needs no liberation. What a wonderful inner fullness, profusion!
