Ashtavakra Gita 18.83 -

धीरो न द्वेष्टि संसारमात्मानं न दिदृक्षति ।
हर्षामर्षविनिर्मुक्तो न मृतो न च जीवति

dhīro na dveṣṭi saṃsāram-ātmānaṃ na didṛkṣati .
harṣāmarṣa-vinirmukto na mṛto na ca jīvati .. 18-83..

The enlightened one hates not the world, nor yearns to perceive the Self. Freed from delight and affliction, he is neither dead nor living.

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Anyone is bound to wonder: Can this kind of a state be attained? Yes, it can be. Human intelligence is a wonder. Its potential to probe into the depths of Consciousness is supreme.

In interacting with the phenomenal world, our senses get exhausted. But by the inner probe, mind and intelligence are appreciably refreshed. The contrast is significant.

Viveka, discrimination and vairagya, dispassion, are two fundamental qualities of a seeker. Viveka shows that everything in the world, including our own body, is fleeting. From the fleeting one cannot obviously get lasting contentment. Naturally attraction for the world dwindles, and dispassion grows. The seeker dislikes the world. That is why some seek solitude to do their sādhanā.

The wise one’s knowledge-orientation is strikingly different. He has no dislike for world, also no special interest to perceive the Self, because there are no two entities like world and Self. Non-dual Self is present everywhere. How can then be a manifold world? When viveka is oriented in this manner, world becomes an illusion. Where is the question of disliking it? Do you hate a dream foe?

In the Knower, dvandvas’ hold with all related emotional urges fall. Such a one, says the Sage, is neither dead nor alive. Aliveness and non-aliveness become irrelevant to him. To rise above dvandvas is to be non-dual. What a wonderful way and model!
