Everything is but sheer imagination. The Self is free, liberated and eternal. Knowing this, what will the wise, who is like a child, practise or pursue?

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

To reach the Self, the source and substratum of everything and all, is to get away from all. How can this be achieved? It is not as in the visible physical plane, leaving one place or object, and moving to another. There is no plurality, no place or scope to leave and get at. Everything is inner perception, imagination, involving no grossness, solidity or otherwise.

Suppose you sit in a place and begin to think. May be half an hour passes. See where you were before all the thoughts transpired. And where are you now, after thinking? Are the thoughts there? Because of them, their effects, has anything happened to you – any scar, dent, colour or other marks?

Suppose you had walked half an hour. At least it must have caused foot-prints on the earth. Nothing like this has happened by thinking! The mind remains what it was before. Thinking has no identifiable mark. It is all sheer imagination!

Is not the whole world around, together with whatever takes place in it in the form of movement, action, interaction and their effects, as far as their imprint on the mind is concerned, solely imaginary? The mind through the senses perceives the physical processes. The imprints, if at all, are inner and mental alone. Hence they are imaginary. Therefore, what practice or pursuit can the Knower take up on its basis? He lives, moves and acts freely like a child, with no special intent or expectation. Imagine how easy, facile and light is the way of the enlightened!
