क्व स्वप्न: क्व सुषुप्तिर्वा क्व च जागरणं तथा ।

kva svapnaḥ kva suṣuptir-vā kva ca jāgaraṇaṃ tathā .
kva turīyaṃ bhayaṃ vāpi sva-mahimni sthitasya me .. 19-5..

Dwelling as I am in my own enchanting effulgence, where is dream or where is sleep, where is likewise wakefulness as well? Where is even the turīyam, the fourth factor, or where is any fear as well?

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Think about anything, or take any experience. What is the first factor and the last in it all? Every one sees the world of infinite variety and distances. But what comes first in perceiving everything? You or the other? World does not see or feel us. We alone look at the world, form its imprint within us. Morning we wake up, look at the world, begin our interactions with it. At the end of the day, we withdraw and wipe off the whole world from us.

Janaka even denounces the three states of awareness we have, and their substratum. Of the three states, world prevails only in our wakeful state. In sleep and dream, it is extinct. None of the states has any claim for being real, each being transitory. Anything so, is not real. If all the three are not real, they recur only due to the fourth factor, turīyam. The four go together. In the absence of the fourth, the three also cannot survive.

Janaka disclaims all four. If the three states were not there, where is the need of a substratum for them? Naturally the reference to the fourth is redundant. Hence, Janaka denies all. Self-experience is so sovereign, ceaseless that he cannot give any credence to the three states and the fourth too. This is to take spiritual wisdom to its very rare acme! In the preceding verse, he denounced the Self and non-Self also. To denounce all, should not the denouncing grand Self ‘svamahima’ be there! Wonderful indeed!
