परिग्रहेषु वैराग्यं प्रायो मूढस्य दृश्यते ।

parigraheṣu vairāgyaṃ prāyo mūḍhasya dṛśyate .
dehe vigalitāśasya kva rāgaḥ kva virāgatā .. 18-62..

For the ignorant, displeasure is invariably seen in gifts and possessions. But for the one in whom all desires have fallen, where is any desire or dispassion?

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Spiritual science and practice rest upon viveka, the privilege and pursuit of intelligence. By enquiring into the world in which we live as well as experience, the intelligence arrives at its own conclusions. Thus, none can escape the fact that like the five bhūtas, earth, water, etc., the world objects too, made up of these, including our body and senses, are inert, insentient. How can the inert contact with sense-object by itself generate happiness? Any joy or contentment, if enquired into, is emotional. It is mind’s own creation.

What is the point then in seeking objects and their contacts with the senses, for deriving satisfaction at all? Instead, one should probe within to get the joy he wants. Such a conclusion is inescapable for one given to vichāra, introspection.

The Knower first and last knows that he is not the inert body. He only uses it, like a mechanic his tool. He is the body-different Self, which by its nature is blissful. So, for all the joy he looks for, he turns inward. If this inner search becomes stable, how can desire sprout in the mind at all? Neither is desire there in him nor dispassion. Both being a dvandva set, either both will be or neither. Knower thus becomes free of desire and dispassion alike. The deluded, ignorant, alone dislikes the objects and invites suffering. Knower delights by knowing the delightful Self. He does not look for or need any object at all.
