Ashtavakra Gita 18.5 -

The Self is a presence every one feels. Even a child feels his presence. One’s presence is self-revealing, ceaselessly so. There is no scope for doubt at all about this presence. For anyone to doubt anything, he must first be. Doubter being already present, doubt can crop up. Self is the doubter, who cannot thus be doubted at all any time. Self-experience is personal, direct and unbroken.

Is the Self the least distant for anyone any time? We have the body. It is gross, visible. We can see it only when our eyes are open. Body contains limbs, distant from one another. It is, you can say, a little away from the mind. Mind also is distant, when we are in sleep. In sleep mind disappears; so do intelligence and ego. All are a little far. There is no such distance to the Self.

It is also not limited like the body or its limbs. There is no effort to experience the Self. Nor does the Self do any effort. Effort is in whatever the body, mind, intelligence and ego do, also the heart, lungs, brain, hands, feet, etc. do.

The Self undergoes no modification at all. ‘I’ in every one, a child, adult and the old, man and woman, the cripple, the blind and the dumb, is the same, unchanged, unmutilated, unscarred.

Sleep evidences this. The rich person sleeps. So too the poor and the beggar. There is no richness in sleep, nor poverty or beggar-hood. In every one the Self is unconditioned, hence is absolute and full. Self has no parts or distinctions of any kind.
