Ashtavakra Gita 18.37 -

मूढो नाप्नोति तद्ब्रह्म यतो भवितुमिच्छति ।
अनिच्छन्नपि धीरो हि परब्रह्मस्वरूपभाक्

mūḍho nāpnoti tad-brahma yato bhavitum-icchati .
anicchann-api dhīro hi parabrahma-svarūpabhāk .. 18-37..

The ignorant, deluded, attains not that Brahman, for he desires to become that (Brahman). On the other hand, the wise one, who yearns not at all, becomes Brāhmic by nature.

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

How insistently the Sage takes Janaka, the ruler of Mithila, nay every seeker, to the subtlest process of Self-realization! Understand clearly that deep introspection by the intelligence is the most subtle, inner, effort a human can hope to pursue. It is subtler than meditation, revolving a single optional thought within.

Sage Vasishtha repeatedly speaks to Rama about attenuating desires, and finally dropping even the desire for liberation, which too is as hindering as other desires. The seeker’s desire for liberation thinking that it is superior, is but a means to outlive all worldly desires. Thereby when all object-desires fall, he should, with sharper discrimination, drop even the desire for liberation.

What you need is the Self, yourself. Is desire necessary for it? You can and will desire only something you are not. If what you want is yourself, is not desire-freeness the way for it?

I ask you to stand, ready to run to a destination, I specify. You fix your feet in position, ready to run when signalled. The few moments of anxiety pass. I tell you to run, but to reach where you stand. Will you run or not start at all?

This too, dear seekers, is an effort, sharp and precise attention, where alert application is called for. It is the right response from your deepest note of attention and knowledge, say discreet knowledge sensibility!
