By inaction or action the ignorant gains no peacefulness. By gaining resoluteness about the supreme Truth alone, the Knower becomes peaceful.
Nirvṛti or quietitude is not an object to be attained by any specific effort, as in the sensory world of objects. However disciplined or regulated you are, you will never have the superb inner gain of placidity and beatitude. The first and foremost requirement is the right knowledge about beatitude and how it can be gained. This is solely a matter of quest and knowledge, which the intelligence has to take up devoutly.
Beatitude is a treasure held by the Self within, which we denote by the term ‘I’. Enquire about what this ‘I’ is, and arrive at the conclusion that it is your real identity. If so, where is the question of going to it, gaining or acquiring it at all? Know that it dwells within your body, as different from all those you refer to as ‘mine’. In other words, you have to get into your own inner depths and unearth the treasure.
The process is inner, in the way of probing. The entire discussion the Sage takes up with king Janaka, like the dialogue of Krishna with Arjuna, of Sage Vasishtha with prince Rama of Ayodhya, constitutes this probe in all its precision and fineness.
So, leave all talk of effort and no effort. Remove your ignorance by reflecting upon the ‘I’, the singular inner spiritual presence, the sole witness of everything, naturally blissful and ever present! When the reflection grows and matures, you will realize the Self.
