For the one risen above worldliness, there is no delight or depression anywhere. Ever graced with a cool mind, he shines as if he is disembodied!

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Everyone has a body. It is this body that we see and refer to as he or another. Oneself also sees it, as others do, with similar eyes. For others it is an object. But oneself feels it is he himself, despite the fact that like others he also sees it. Why and how then while others find it an object, oneself takes it as ‘I’, ‘myself’, the Subject? Is it not a flagrant contradiction, a grave delusion? When will it be set right? If one only has a body, why should he take it as himself, ‘myself’? Here comes the role of spiritual enquiry, directed to oneself, to probe into the matter thoroughly and unearth the truth about the body vis-a-vis oneself!

‘I’ refers to the Self, the Subject. Mine refers to the body, the object. ‘I’ reigns as the witness and the body remains as witnessed. ‘My’, the possessive case, always denotes something different from oneself. Difference between the ‘I’ and the body is like the body and the dress we wear, or the dweller in a house and the house itself. Once this differentiation is clear, one instantly becomes the Knower. He feels he is different from his body as well as the world his senses in the body perceive. The vision renders him totally unworldly, asamsārī. As he is not the body, he is also not the world.

Thus, he only witnesses, experiences, the delight and depression caused by worldly life. His mind is calm and placid. He lives and moves, only virtually. Such is the transcendence he experiences!
