Ashtavakra Gita 16.9 -

हातुमिच्छति संसारं रागी दु:खजिहासया ।
वीतरागो हि निर्दु:खस्तस्मिन्नपि न खिद्यति

hātum-icchati saṃsāraṃ rāgī duḥkha-jihāsayā .
vīta-rāgo hi nirduḥkhas-tasminn-api na khidyati .. 16-9..

The desireful and greedy aspires to renounce the world, intending to avoid unhappiness. He who has risen above desire, being freed of grief, does not feel tormented in the world.

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

The whole emphasis of Sage Ashtavakra is on getting to the singular inner Self, by getting properly exposed to it. Sadguru takes the trouble of instructing the seeker variously, until his instruction sinks deeply in him. The seeker must be able to get to the Self within his body, just as the eyes see an object in front, or the ears hearing a sound. Both are experiences, inner too. For the senses it is contact of seeming external objects. But for the mind and intelligence, the experience of the Self is something inner, not involving any contact or interaction. Don’t we comprehend thoughts arising within us, also feelings, memory, etc.? No external medium is involved in this inner experience.

Likewise, the Self can be known directly by intelligence. What is needed is utter dispassion for all sensory objects, whatever they may be. When the interest in and dependence on all external objects vacate the mind, there will be no distraction at all. They will become free to turn within and focus fully on the inner presence. This is characterized by cessation of all thinking processes. When it takes place, what will reign is the source of all inner processes like thoughts, feelings, emotions, enquiries, reason, etc. From thoughts, you go to the thinker, and thence to the thinking substance, the source of all. With utter indifference to all dvandvas, including body and soul, rest in the free and fulfilling Consciousness.
