Ashtavakra Gita 16.6 -

विरक्तो विषयद्वेष्टा रागी विषयलोलुप: ।
ग्रहमोक्षविहीनस्तु न विरक्तो न रागवान्

virakto viṣaya-dveṣṭā rāgī viṣaya-lolupaḥ .
graha-mokṣa-vihīnas-tu na virakto na rāgavān .. 16-6..

The dispassionate is a hater of sensory objects. The desireful is excessively indulgent in them. He who is bereft of both acceptance and rejection, is neither dispassionate nor desireful.

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Sage Ashtavakra brings one point after another, showing how singular and supreme Self-pursuit is. In order to reach at the Self, the seeker has to leave everything and all. The usual path of dharma or propriety clearly implies accepting what is proper and hence rejecting the improper, making the pursuit far from being full, wholesome. Is there not a way of avoiding such incompleteness?

Self is all-pervading and hence present in everything and all. Where is then the need for abandoning anything in order to accept something else? Is not our intelligence perceptive enough to grasp the hollowness of the path of division? By tattva-manana the intelligence should be able to expose the inadequacy of all divisional tastes, and the need to focus on the singular wholesomeness of the Self. It is a question of the mind getting refined to fall in line with the lofty introspection of the intelligence.

Maharshi says the dispassionate seeker is guilty of hating objects permeated by the Self. Equally so, the greedy is guilty of overindulging in objects. Both rejection and acceptance carry the same defect of incompleteness. Therefore, the right way will be to keep away from passion and dispassion alike, indulgence as well as abstinence. When passion as well as dispassion has no special appeal for you and the mind is steeped in samatva, the Self shines uniformly, making you poised, stable and ecstatic. What a wonderful fullness and abundance!
