That Self-knower, who has equal disposition in all states and conditions, is indeed blessed. His mind is bereft of desire, while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and eating.
Spiritual pursuit consists primarily in being desire-free and preserving equal vision. By desiring any object, the mind is getting constricted. Happiness mind feels when desire is fulfilled is verily from itself. For, mind is no other than the Self, Consciousness, but reflecting the objects. No joy or experience can ever come from inert objects. And mind does not go out of the body too. Thus, any and all experiences, including joy or contentment, are what the mind itself produces remaining within the body.
Knowing that this is so, the spiritual seeker leaves all desires and rests on the mind itself, namely the Self. The mind that becomes desireful can also become desire-free. In desirefulness, it becomes agitated and tense. With desirefree-ness, freed of agitation and tension, the mind verily becomes the bliss-radiating Self.
Desirefree-ness and equalness are the summary qualities a seeker must imbibe resolutely. The Knower is established in these. The Sage is picturing such an enlightened one. He will be equally disposed to all activities and whatever outcomes they bring about. So too, he will be having a pure mind, filled with the radiance of the Self. With these two, whether he sees, hears, smells, tastes or touches the objects, he will reflect the same evenness and equipoise. Evenness to these five sensations means evenness to the entire world. How? Because the five senses alone perceive the world and make it five-fold.
