The state of the wise one, which has no motive behind it and is free from all pretence and ostentation verily shines; not indeed the artificial calmness of the ignorant with a desireful mind.

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Spirituality is the science and pursuit of a life based upon the immaculate, imperishable Self, which every one is right from the birth of his body. One given to it must, therefore, have the quality of openness, straight-forwardness. Pretence, artificiality or ostentation has no place in seeking. Any such contamination is to be carefully eliminated with sternness. Erasing bad qualities is even more important than cultivating good ones. The Sage began his instruction setting forth five qualities for the seeker, with ārjava, straight-forwardness as the second.

The seeker should be relentlessly open and straight-forward. In seeking unfoldment of the Self, can he allow veils in himself?

Desire and motivation go together. Both veil the Self. To make the mind open, one has to shed his constrictions, which include desire and motivation too. Knower has no cause for any motivation, as he has no expectation. Nor does he aim at anything in particular. Self gets revealed when all veils and obstructions recede. Knower’s state is one of natural purity and innocence, with no need for pretence or display.

The Sage also refers to the ignorant and his artificial display of calm. That does not shine; instead, the discreet easily see it. But the composure and delight of the wise are self-evident. They scintillate, attracting many to seek solace and enlightenment.
