Ashtavakra Gita 18.31 -

निर्ध्यातुं चेष्टितुं वापि यच्चित्तं न प्रवर्तते ।
निर्निमित्तमिदं किन्तु निर्ध्यायति विचेष्टते

nirdhyātuṃ ceṣṭituṃ vāpi yac-cittaṃ na pravartate .
nirnimittam-idaṃ kintu nirdhyāyati viceṣṭate .. 18-31..

The mind of the liberated strives not for meditation or activity. At the same time, it meditates and acts, but with no motive whatever.

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

One is alive only as long as he has a mobile body. Nevertheless he is not the body. Senses in the body cannot see anything beyond physical objects. The invisible presence within, makes the body alive, active and experiential. Senses cannot perceive it. This does not mean we cannot access it. The inner faculties like the mind and intelligence are superior to senses, as Krishna unambiguously points in Gita (3.42 ).

So, let the senses remain powerless. Use the mind and intelligence properly to grasp the inner presence. Enquire who or what comprehends thoughts, feelings, memory, etc. Who reveals the presence of the body itself? In fact, this dialogue discusses throughout the subtle process of inner spiritual perception, wherein the role of intelligence is paramount. Through concept, comparison, contrast and inference, the presence of Consciousness, the Self, alone is repeatedly stressed.

Think of a huge truck or a long train. The driver inside it is moving the vehicle. He is able to do so, because he is seated stably inside and does not move himself. Can the vehicle containing the body, mind, intelligence and ego move on the Earth, without such a non-moving driver inside it?

Yes, the immovable Self drives the body including mind, intelligence, etc. as Krishna states in Gita (18.61 ). Whatever the Knower seemingly does, including meditation, is without any motivation.
