Ashtavakra Gita 10.3 -

यत्र यत्र भवेत्तृष्णा संसारं विद्धि तत्र वै ।
प्रौढवैराग्यमाश्रित्य वीततृष्ण: सुखी भव

yatra yatra bhavet-tṛṣṇā saṃsāraṃ viddhi tatra vai .
prauḍha-vairāgyam-āśritya vīta-tṛṣṇaḥ sukhī bhava ..

Wherever crops up desire, greed, there flashes worldliness. Taking recourse to deep rooted dispassion, transcend desire and be comfortable and exultant.

Commentary by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Do not think that desire or greed merely rises within, in the mind alone. Effect of this inner offshoot is instant, powerful and sweeping. As from the sleeper, an effulgent, alluring, widespread dream-world sprouts, from the inner desire springs up at once the entire outer world also. Inner desire and outer world are synonymous, like a plane mirror and the reflection inside it.

Ashtavakra Maharshi holds that whenever you desire, instantly crops up the world too. To desire means to long for something. So, together with the desire also arises the object to be desired. Without an object, there cannot be a desire at all.

Sage Vasishtha tells the 16-year-old Rama, during the 18-day dialogue they had in the palace of Ayodhya, that the entire world display is but the creative thoughts and imaginations of the mind alone (Yoga-vāsiṣṭha 3.122.55 ). Get rid of the imaginational process, and instantly will you attain peace, concludes Vasishthadeva.

The Sage here says: Knowing well that all the visibles are transitory, foster utter dispassion to them. Recede from the object-involvement. Close up with the Self within, the sole Subject of all objects. And rejoice, revel and exult unhinderedly. Mind you, you, the ‘I’ in you, never becomes the object. It is the witness of all. Neither does it become the witnessed, nor the witnessed becomes the witness. What more do you want to be exultant?
