In the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna says that there are four kinds of worshippers of the Supreme Lord—the afflicted, the enquirers, those who desire worldly attainments and knowers of Truth (Jnanis). Of these four, the Jnani is the dearest to the Lord because he sees the Divine in everything.

People driven by various desires worship different Devatas according to their own tendencies and aspirations. Sri Krishna allows such worship and declares that whoever worships with full shraddha (sincerity), he Himself makes the worship steady and unswerving. Such a devotee also attains his desired objectives, as ordained by the Lord.

However, those who worship other deities for worldly gains expend much effort for limited and temporary results. Not knowing the imperishable, transcendental nature of the Supreme, they consider the invisible spiritual presence or Lord, as limited by the visible body. The results of such worship are transitory and will not bestow eternal joy.
