In this informal session, Swamiji emphasizes that rituals keep the society bridled and guide people towards auspiciousness, but scriptures like the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita emphasize the need of progressing beyond ritualism toward inner freedom. Spirituality must lead to a transformation of one’s own personality. One must live a spiritual life, being flexible, open, and expansive.
Identifying with the Self is not a mechanical practice but a continuous, moment-to-moment divinization of life. Scriptures serve as tools to purify and expand the mind, aiding introspection. But liberation ultimately depends on inner transformation.
Seekers must observe their personality without elation or dejection and correct what must be corrected. Mind is usually not cheerful because of desires and expectations that bind the mind. Through vichara (introspection) one must discover that happiness lies within.
The unchanging consciousness does not undergo any change when the body falls; it is eternal, ever-present. Realizing this Self, while living, is the goal of spiritual life.
Questions raised and shlokas quoted in the Session:
3:41 - How do you open the minds of people who are ritualistic?
17:12 - आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वतः ….Rg Veda
21:21 – If I am not the body-mind personality, and I am the witness, please tell me a method to practice to start identifying with the witness?
30:23 - For one to be liberated, is it necessary to do scriptural studies or is it enough to do introspection or both?
34:25 - My mind is not able to get depth to experience inner presence. I am not able to experience any Ananda. Will cultivating divine qualities help me?
44:13 – How to handle emotions, being detached?
53:56 – How can we know what happens when we die?
