In this informal session, Swamiji emphasizes that spirituality is the discovery of one’s true identity beyond body and mind. He explains that the “I” is the observer of bodily changes, thoughts, emotions, and personality, yet people mistakenly identify with these changeful aspects. True inquiry begins by turning inward to discover the witnessing consciousness, or Atma, which is beyond birth, death, and limitation.

Explaining the concept of rebirth, Swamiji says that such models are created to bridle the society and keep it in the auspicious path. But deep introspection leads to the understanding that the Soul (one’s own real identity) is transcendental, imperishable, unchanging, unaffected and untainted. This is the Self which is to be discovered, realized.

Nothing happens to the Atma when the body dies. Only the awareness associated with the body—the limited consciousness we ordinarily experience—ceases to function because of defects in the bodily instrument. Nothing happens to the Atma. Therefore, there is no question of rebirth, because there is no birth or death in the first place. No change can take place in the Atma.

Spirituality develops an impersonal dimension of mind, enabling one to act without attachment, like ideal kings or realized beings. Swamiji emphasizes that one has a responsibility toward future generations to give them good inputs to nourish their mind and intelligence.
