266 – Taittiriya Upanishad – 34 | Voice of Upanishads | Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

In this Satsang, Swamiji discusses the journey of Bhrigu to discover and realize Brahman. His Guru (Varuna) repeatedly sent him to do Tapasya to purify his being, mind, and heart. Tapas transforms a seeker’s being until finally he becomes Brahman. Real Tapas is to withdraw the senses from the distracting forces of the world and converge the mind and thoughts and make them one-pointed.

Bhrigu came to know his mind as Brahman, but the mind also is changeful. Varuna again emphasized the importance of Tapasya and the need to discover the Truth first-hand. After doing the austerity, Bhrigu came to know the intelligence as Brahman. But the intelligence also is varying and not permanent. Again, doing austerity, he came to know Ananda as Brahman. He understood that everything is born of Ananda, is sustained by Ananda, and moving towards and finally merging in Ananda.

This knowledge, which is established in the Supreme, conscious space, has been given the name Bhaargavi-Vaaruni vidya. One who discovers this Vidya as seated in the conscious space of our heart, becomes well-established in this. The Upanishad says that such a person will have lot of food, will become great, will have fame, will have progeny, animals, and will have a spiritual glow.

The 7th-10th Anuvakas emphasize that the body and material existence is not be ignored or neglected. External wealth, fame etc. is not to be decried. The knower of Brahman moves around freely without desires, sanga or possessiveness, embracing the whole world as Brahman.
