In this Satsang, Swamiji begins the exposition of Mandukya Upanishad-- the last word in theoretical Vedanta. It consists of only twelve Mantras, which are profound, abstract, and subtle.
Normally, Upanishads are presented with a background story, a conversation, or a dialogue, to make the abstract truth easier to grasp. However, the Mandukya Upanishad does not take the help of a story; it takes the help of the sacred monosyllable Om to reveal the Truth. In the Upanishad, it has been related to our different states of existence and also the states of Consciousness.
The three states of Consciousness—wakefulness (jaagrat), dream (svapna), and sleep (sushupti)--are experienced by the Consciousness. It is neither wakefulness, nor sleep, nor dream. It is called Turiya. It is involved in the three, but it transcends the three states. The whole effort of spirituality is to discover this Turiya which leads to the direct knowledge of ‘Who am I’ who is undergoing the states of jagrat, svapna and sushupti.
The Upanishad declares that everything is Omkara; everything is the Imperishable, unchanging Consciousness. It is beyond all the concepts of the mind and intelligence; it is indescribable. It transcends the past, present and the future (transcends time) and whatever else there is beyond the three divisions of time - that too is Om.
