Lecture series by Nutan Swamiji during Delhi Sadhana Shibiram 2025.
Date: 17 September 2025
Venue: CIRD, Delhi
In this Satsang, Swamiji discusses the Gunatraya (three-guna) model of the Bhagavad Gita, which is a complete and effective framework for understanding creation and our own personality. The whole creation is expressed in terms of the three gunas—Sattva, rajas and tamas. Prakriti is made of the three gunas. Bhagavad Gita discusses the three gunas in the relation to our personality.
In this created universe, there cannot be anything existing which is not a combination of the three gunas. Sattva guna represents knowledge, light, revelation. Rajo guna represents activity. Tamo guna represents inertia. All the three gunas create bondage for the human being, when one identifies with them. Sattva guna binds by sukha sanga and jnana sanga; rajo guna binds by clinging to desire-motivated activities; tamo guna binds people by inattention, laziness and sleep.
Tamo guna bondage can be overcome by cultivating rajo guna and sattva guna; rajo guna bondage can be overcome by cultivation of Sattva guna. The Sattva guna bondage can be overcome only by Avyabhicharini Bhakti (unswerving devotion), and surrender (non-expectation). By becoming free of the bondage of the gunas, one gets rid of smallness and becomes universal.
