True spiritual growth begins with a deep longing for satsanga—the association of enlightened beings—whose presence alone purifies the being. Other key virtues include humility before the teacher, intense dedication to learning, fidelity in relationships, devotion to God, self-control, and avoidance of negative influences. Appreciating virtues in others helps cultivate them within oneself, while fault-finding depletes inner growth.

Swamiji says that these values give courage, and will enable one to be persevering. Chanting such verses enriches and refines the personality and also removes sorrow.
