Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha takes us to a fundamental point – in all of spirituality the sole focus is on the mind. Irrespective of our material circumstances, contentment is purely of the mind. So too is suffering a plight borne by the mind, whatever the objective cause. Swamiji uses the sleep and wakeful states of our daily existence to bring about a radical shift in our perception of the world.
The entire world follows our state of wakefulness. It is not the world that makes us awake, it is our wakefulness that brings the world to us. When we sleep, that same multifarious world is completely wiped off. Yet we awake being completely aware that we had slept. What is it in us then, that experiences these evanescent states? It is the “I” in us that is nothing other than the Supreme, unchanging Self.
When we understand that every experience is nothing but an imprint in our own mind, we can freely move about in this world, accepting everything and enduring anything, being completely unaffected. The first step to realizing this Truth is to receive with humility and openness, from our Spiritual Masters who live it themselves.
