Day 1 of a two-day Satsang series given by Nutan Swamiji, on Qualities of a Devotee, based on Bhagavad Gita Chapter 12.
Date: 14 March 2026
Venue: CIRD Jamshedpur
In this Satsang, Swamiji discusses the characteristics of a true devotee, as enumerated in Bhakti Yoga. He explains that true Bhakti means Samarpanam or complete surrender to the Lord. When one is truly surrendered, all the Bhakta lakshanas (qualities of a devotee) will naturally adorn the devotee. A seeker must reflect on these qualities and assess whether he has them.
A true devotee must be free from dvesha (hatred or intolerance) towards any being. When the mind is free of hatred, the mind remains calm, peaceful, and expansive. One should be happy to see others’ prosperity, appreciate their noble qualities and feel happy in their happiness. At the same time, one should be compassionate and empathetic towards others’ suffering.
A bhakta must be free of ‘Mamatva’ (mineness or possessiveness), which constricts the mind. Through various real-life examples, Swamiji explains how Nirmamatva helps a person work selflessly for the greater good.
