In this Satsang, Swamiji reiterates that we do not know that we are immortal because of ignorance, desires and the impurity in us. When the mind becomes free of all smallness, we come closer and closer to the Atma. Spiritual sadhana means expansion of the mind by which we come closer to the Self.
Swamiji begins discussing the third chapter where a mythological story is introduced. The story highlights the greatest obstacle in perceiving the Truth—Ego. The purpose of the story is to highlight the greatness of Brahma Vidya and create a value for this knowledge.
Brahman helped the Devas to win the war against Asuras. The Devas thought that they had attained victory because of their own glory. Brahman knew about their inflated ego and wanted to make sure that their Abhimana (ego) was removed. With the intention of removing the ego of the Devas, Brahman appeared before them.
The Devas filled with Abhimana could not understand what it was that appeared before them. Assuming that it was a Yaksha, Agni went near him. Wanting to test Agni’s powers, Brahman kept a blade of grass before him and asked him to burn it. Unable to do so, Agni returned to the Devas but he was not humbled.
