Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

13 – Kenopanishad – by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

In this Satsang, Swamiji continues with the discussion of the story in the Upanishad where Brahman appears before the Devas in the form of a spirit. He wanted to treat the ego (Ahankara) of the Devas because the Devas had forgotten that the source of their own courage and power was Brahman.

The Devas, seeing the strange apparition, wanted to know who it was. Both Agni and Vayu, one by one, went near Brahman but failed to know the identity of Brahman. Still not humbled, they returned and asked Indra to find out who the spirit was. When Indra went near the Yaksha, the apparition disappeared. Indra meditated and deliberated in his mind about the identity of the appearance. Understanding his humility, Haimavati (Uma) appeared before him.

Uma told him that it was Brahman who had appeared before the Devas to smash their false sense of pride.

The Upanishad says that Indra, Agni and Vayu excelled other Devas because they had come very close to Brahman. They were the first among the Devas to know Brahman, in the form of a Yaksha. Indra knew Brahman closely and he superseded all other Devas because he came to know about Brahman from Uma.
