Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

07 – Kenopanishad – by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

In this Satsang, Nutun Swamiji discusses the Mantras from the second Chapter of the Kenopanishad which is a conversation between the Guru and the Shishya.

The Guru says that if one believes that they understand the self, they fail to truly understand the truth about the self. Whatever the shishya has known is insufficient or incomplete. What the shishya has known has to be further analyzed. Swamiji says that knowing the self is becoming the self, which is our own Swaroopa. How is this possible? When a sadhaka’s mind becomes pure and placidity dawns in him, when he is free from raga, dvesha and bhaya (desire, hatred and fear) then he is fit and capable of knowing his own Swaroopa.

In the following verses Swamiji explains that by using contradictory statements the shastras compel the sadhaka to do further analysis or manana on the true nature of the Self. One who thinks that he has known Brahman, actually has not known. One who considers that it cannot be conceptualized, for him it becomes known. The path, the Gurus and sages say, is as sharp as a sharpened razor’s edge and extremely difficult to follow. One needs an alert, astute and keen intelligence.

The Gurus exhort us to take to timely and constant introspection. Only then the path becomes fruitful and easy.
