Swamiji begins the talk by saying that the Upanishads are trying to bring our focus to a higher, subtler and non-objective reality which is the source behind all the functions of the mind, senses and life forces. Upanishads speak about only one thing--the Consciousness which is beyond all the objectude. This truth cannot be different from oneself. The self, which is the source of all functions of our body, mind etc is the substratum of the world.

Normally, we are looking for joy from external sources. We are looking constantly for something other than the Atma. We do not realize that joy and contentment is only in the Atma. The Atma cannot be had unless we are focussed one-pointedly on the Truth and we choose it in preference to everything else.

The Mantras specify that the Consciousness is different from the known and also the unknown. It is the Knower. How can it be said that the Self is different from the unknown? Swamiji clarifies that as long as we are seekers, we think that the Self is unknown. But the Self can never be unknown. Self is what ‘I am’. One has to know the Self as ‘I am’. When we stop trying to know anything different from us, then the Self will reveal itself.

Swamiji begins explaining the mantra of the second chapter and explains each word and the Anvaya, clarifying its import. In the Mantra, the Guru tells the Shishya that his knowledge is still incomplete. Whatever the shishya has known, needs to be further analyzed, inspected, and investigated.
