Talk given by Nutan Swamiji during 14th Sreemad Bhagavata Tattva Sameeksha Satram
26 December 2015

In this talk, Swamiji takes up one phrase ‘मा विद्विषावहै’ from the Upanishadic Shanti mantra-“ॐ सह नाववतु । सह नौ भुनक्तु....” and speaks about the relationship between the Guru and the shishya, which is crucial in the communication of Brahma Vidya (Supreme Knowledge) in every generation.

In this self-addressed prayer, both the Guru and the shishya wish for protection and nourishment, so that Brahma Vidya is preserved in the society and the society is kept in the auspicious path. They pray that their minds must be nourished by good and expansive thoughts and the intelligence must be nourished by Viveka buddhi (discriminating intelligence).

They pray for courage, which can be had only when one is connected to the Soul, and pray that the knowledge gained must make them brilliant, by their assimilating and living the knowledge. And finally, they pray that they should not have any intolerance for each other.

Why would a shishya have hatred for the Guru? The main hindrance to realizing the Truth is the small ego that we have created, which makes us fragmented. This ego does not allow us to even have a glimpse of the natural universal rhythm. The Guru’s role is to help the shishya get rid of the smallness. When the Guru gives corrections and suggestions for sublimating the ego, the shishya may conclude that the Guru does not appreciate or like him. This may breed intolerance in the disciple.

Swamiji narrates a story from the scriptures which highlights the intolerance of the shishya and narrates some stories of Guru-bhakti (devotion to the Guru). Quoting various shlokas from the scriptures, he highlights the role of the Guru and the uniqueness of the Guru-shishya relationship.
