Talk given by Ma Gurupriya ji during the 16th Sreeemad Bhagavata tattva Sameeksha Satram, at Namisharanyam, Parlikkad, Thrissur on 30 December 2017

In this talk, Ma speaks about the core message of Srimad Bhagavatam. How can a devotee overcome fear and anxiety? The text says that if a seeker wishes to go beyond fear, then he must listen to the glories of the Lord, sing His name, remember Him and discuss about Him. No education, austerity, disciplines, pilgrimage, Japa or charity can bring about purity in the mind. The mind becomes pure only when the all-pervading Lord is installed in the heart and mind.

If one wants freedom from fear and permanent happiness, then one must cultivate non-possessiveness, sensory and mind restraint, equanimity and contentment. When one has fondness for God to the exclusion of all other things, is tranquil, noble-minded, loving all beings, and desire-free, his mind is graced by a happiness, which is not dependent on anything of the world.

Srimad Bhagavatam is not to be only read and discussed, it must be deeply contemplated upon. This will lead to unaffectedness and fearlessness. By deep introspection, one understands that God is there in everything—in the Panchabhutas, in all directions, plants, trees, rivers and oceans. When this understanding dawns, one becomes humble and bows down before everything in the world. When one constantly thinks about the Lord, introspects on Him, the love for the Lord increases and stabilizes and dispassion for the world increases. By this, one realizes the Truth.

What kind of devotion must one have? As little birds await their mother to come back and feed them, as hungry calves long for their mother’s udder, as a faithful wife anxiously waits for her long-separated husband, with that kind of a longing a devotee must yearn for the all-pervading Lord. By Vichara, one must constantly assess whether devotion and dispassion are increasing.
