In this Global Satsang, Swamiji begins the discussion of Taittiriya Upanishad which belongs to Krishna Yajurveda.

Sage Vaishampayana had four disciples, one of whom was the renowned sage Yajnavalkya. Yajnavalkya had grown conceited about his spiritual prowess. An argument ensued between the Guru and the shishya following an incident, and seeing Yajnavalkya’s conceit the Guru asked him to return all the knowledge that had been imparted to him. Obeying his Guru’s words, Yajnavalkya vomited all the knowledge. The other disciples took the form of Tittiri Pakshis (partridges) and consumed the vomited Knowledge. This came to be known as the ‘Taittiriya Upanishad”.

Taittiriya Upanishad is mainly divided into three segments (Vallis)—Shiksha Valli, Brahmaananda Valli and Bhrigu Valli. Shiksha valli (which has 12 segments) is a treasure-house of moral instructions. It emphasizes the importance of proper pronunciation and chanting of Vedic literature and speaks about how one should live properly taking good care of the body, mind, intelligence. It speaks about one’s responsibilities as a student, a son, a host and a giver of charities. Shiksha Valli prescribes disciplines, by following which a seeker’s being becomes purified and he becomes fit for Self-Knowledge.

Brahmaananda Valli speaks about practices which can lead one to self-knowledge. It speaks about the Panchakoshaas (five sheaths) in our being—Annamaya Kosha, Pranamaya Kosha, Manomaya Kosha, Vijnanamaya Kosha, and Anandamaya Kosha. A seeker must transcend these five sheaths and attain the goal of life—Self-Realization. The Bhrigu Valli leads one to understand that Brahman is the source of bliss, the source of everything. It alone is real and everything else, including the 5 sheaths, are only appearances in Brahman.

Swamiji will be discussing 'Voice of Upanishads'. The Global Satsang will be based on Taitiriya Upanishad. | Live Satsangs with Spiritual Masters on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 8 pm IST/10:30 am EDT/ 10:30 pm MST.
