04 – by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha – Three Gunas that Binds and Liberates Us

913 Views | 1 month ago

Lecture by Nutan Swamiji based on Chapter 14 of Bhagavad Gita during Sadhana Shibiram in Society for Inner Resources Development, Malaysia on 24 January 2023.

In this Satsang, Swamiji discusses the three gunas and says that everything in creation is made of the three gunas. Sattva guna is the cause of light, knowledge and harmony; Rajo guna involves us in desire-motivated activity and Tamo guna induces inertia, darkness, lethargy and delusion. All the three gunas co-exist and make our personality but their proportions will be different and they will vary with time.

Swamiji says that, normally, our senses, mind and intelligence are a slave to worldliness. But there is a way to get over the slavery to the world. The senses will need to be disciplined and will have to be guided by a discriminating mind. The mind will have to be strengthened and nourished by noble thoughts and inputs. The intelligence will have to be anchored in the Self and be guided by it. Through a process of introspection and discrimination, a seeker will succeed in having an integrated personality and become master of the world.

Outlining the sadhana for a seeker, Swamiji says that one has to adopt Sattva guna practices. A seeker will have to ensure that all his inputs are Sattvika. Whatever one eats, hears, reads, sees or thinks will have to be noble and Sattvika. This will slowly bring about a change in the personality of the seeker and he/she will crave for the association of the wise. When one has Satsang, automatically, the mind imbibes and absorbs noble qualities, cultivates the quality of Dhriti (retaining whatever is heard) and also develops a taste for the spiritual path.

Swamiji will be discussing 'Voice of Upanishads'. The Global Satsang will be based on Isa Upanishad. | Live Satsangs with Spiritual Masters on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 8 pm IST/10:30 am EDT/ 10:30 pm MST.
