In this opening exposition, Swamiji explains Sannyasa as the pinnacle of human life and an inner attainment rather than merely the external adoption of a robe. Human life progresses through Brahmacharya, Garhastya, Vanaprastha, and Sannyasa, with each stage leading toward greater inwardness.

Sannyasa means renouncing ego, possessiveness, and desire through knowledge and discrimination. When the mind becomes free from these, it becomes enlightened. Thus, Sannyasa is an outcome of wisdom and an attainment of the mind and intelligence.

Living and outliving householder life, one withdraws from worldly preoccupations and turns toward the mind, intelligence, ego, and the inner presence that enables all experience and knowledge. Through contemplation, introspection, and meditation, one investigates the source of experience and discovers the truth.

In spite of his preparedness for the war, Arjuna crumbled in the battlefield. He confessed that he was overpowered by narrowmindedness and sought Sri Krishna’s guidance on the path of Shreyas. Swamiji emphasizes that the message of the Bhagavad Gita is Sannyasa and Tyaga.
