260 – Personality Transformation Through Tri-guna Analysis – 02 I Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

467 Views | 8 months ago

Day 2 of a two day Bhagavad Gita Retreat organized by CIRD NA, in Ohio.

In these two days, Nutan Swamiji helps the seekers to understand the Tri-guna model of Bhagavad Gita and guides the seekers in developing their personality by making us understand how to free oneself from the bondages created by the three gunas. A clear understand of this unique concept of Bhagavad Gita helps each and every seeker in the spiritual path.

Date: 29 June 2025
Venue: Genova Community Township hall, 5111 South Old 3C Road, Westerville, Ohio 43082

In this talk, Swamiji explains that the Bhagavad Gita presents various concepts to make the seeker’s mind expansive and universal. The 14th chapter discusses the three gunas as applied to our personality, for understanding, analysing, and improving human personality.

The three gunas—sattva, rajas, and tamas—are an evolute of Nature. Sattva guna binds one through clinging to knowledge and wisdom, rajo guna through clinging to desire-motivated activities, and tamo guna binds through inattention, inertia, and sleep. Liberation means getting rid of the bondage created by the gunas, but not the gunas themselves. A gunatita is one who is free of the bondage of these three gunas.

A seeker can conquer Rajas and tamas through cultivation of sattva guna, while sattva can be transcended by surrender or non-expectation, as highlighted in Srimad Bhagavatam (11.25.34–35). Discussing the Caatur-varna, Swamiji says the infinite variety in human personalities is categorized by Bhagavad Gita into four varṇas (colours) based on guṇa-constitution leading to four kinds of natural propensities (svabhāva-karma). Bhagavad Gita says that while doing svakarma, if one can leave delusion, sense of doership, and sanga, it will lead to liberation.
