32:22 - Stages in Spiritual Ascent
Part 1 - Message on Covid-19 Crisis:
At a time when the land is being ravaged by the merciless COVID 19, Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha’s message is a bastion of hope and confidence. Yes, the situation is dire. But Swamiji reminds us that we live on an earth that does not belong to us, yet it is this very earth that supports us and ensures our welfare.
Whatever needs to be done must continue to be done. All safeguards and precautions must be strictly adhered to. We must appreciate the tireless efforts of healthcare staff who, despite being stretched to the limit, still persist in giving their best to patients. And we must not waste our energy engaging in blame-games.
The spiritual profundity we carry within ourselves is enormous, and Swamiji exhorts us all to employ tools such as the Maha Mrtyumjaya mantra to relieve the world of this crisis. Ultimately it is the strength derived from our own inner resources that will triumph, and Swamiji’s powerful words comfort and inspire, assuring us that we can overcome any adversity, including a global pandemic the likes of which the world has never seen before.
To cling to anything in the objective world is absolute nonsense! This point is hammered home by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha as he guides us towards the 5th rung of the spiritual ladder, the start of the jeevanmukta stage, the stage of one who is liberated while living in this body.
Next we progress to padartha abhavini. At this stage, the seeker becomes aware of how the entire objectude is nothing but imprints in our mind. This powerful realization effectively dissipates any hold the world might have had.
As Swamiji promises to take us to the 7th stage of the spiritual ascent, we are reminded from where this entire scientific discussion evolved – Krishna’s description in response to Arjuna’s question on the Sthitaprajna state. The joy felt in meditational absorption should remain all the way through the interactive life. This way of being is not only a possibility but a compulsion, and the effect is apparent to all of us, as we follow our great Spiritual Masters with wonder and humility.

Those days, there were many rats staying in various pockets of the tiled roof. My room had a very low ceiling and I could even touch the roof tiles. At night, I would see big, big rats running around just near me.
I got back to my daily chores, but the scene remained in my mind – the old man’s wrinkled face, his gleaming eyes, the contentment he enjoyed, his refusal to accept more than ‘his minimum needs’! How many of us can take such a stand?
Bhakti is not so much in the worship with flowers, garlands, lamps or incense sticks. Neither it is in chanting His names and praises. It is verily in living and acting according to the wish of the Lord, pleasing Him, imbibing qualities and attitudes that He wants us to imbibe.
How do we divinise every moment?
