Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

03 – by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha – Three Gunas that Binds and Liberates Us

958 Views | 2 years ago

Lecture by Nutan Swamiji based on Chapter 14 of Bhagavad Gita during Sadhana Shibiram in Society for Inner Resources Development, Malaysia on 23 January 2023.

In this episode, Swamiji explains that the three gunas are the main constituents of the human personality. Explaining what each guna quality is, he says that every human being is a combination of these three gunas alone.

The Sadhana of a seeker is to understand these gunas and their bondage and assess their effects in his own personality. Through some stories and some personal experiences, Swamiji helps us understand how these gunas function and bind us. Through his narratives, we come to recognize that we have the capacity to uplift and liberate ourselves with the help of knowledge.

Tamo guna induces physical, mental and intellectual lethargy, delusion, laziness, sleepiness and leads to a perverted intelligence. Rajo guna leads to coloured vision and preferential clinging. It induces one to ego- oriented and desire- oriented activities. Under its predominance, one is governed by likes and dislikes (Raga and dvesha) and a fragmented and partial vision. Sattva guna leads to understanding, knowledge and purity. It reveals unity in diversity and enhances a comprehensive vision. It enhances discrimination and it leads to the Ultimate Truth.

By having this comprehensive understanding, through our sadhana, we can elevate ourselves from tamas to rajas to sattva and eventually rise above all the three to a state of Nirgunatva – transcending the three gunas.

Swamiji will be discussing 'Voice of Upanishads'. The Global Satsang will be based on Isa Upanishad. | Live Satsangs with Spiritual Masters on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 8 pm IST/10:30 am EDT/ 10:30 pm MST.
