In this Q & A session, responding to questions of the participants, Swamiji explains the profound concepts of spirituality.
Knowing the Self (Self-knowledge) is not like knowing any external object. The seeker’s aim is to know his own real identity; it is non-dual knowledge (Advaya Jnana), where there is no subject-object difference. It cannot be known as anything different from oneself.
The Self, the ‘I’, is behind all experiences; there can be no experience without the Self. We miss it because our attention is habitually drawn to objects appearing in consciousness, not to the consciousness itself. The Self never changes, while all objects are transient. The greatest hurdle in realizing the Self is bhogeccha (tendency to enjoy). There are various subtle, hidden fears and expectations in the mind which prevent us from realizing our own real identity. True realization is attained when we stop seeking anything external and surrender the ego completely to God or Guru.
The mind is normally cluttered with non-acceptance, fear, desires etc. When the seeker removes these knots of the mind, the mind becomes free, and vast. By this practice, he experiences the sky-like joy of the Soul. Swamiji urges seekers to cultivate the dimensions of the Soul in the mind and intelligence.
