In this series of talks, Swamiji discusses Karma yoga and buddhi yoga of the Bhagavad Gita, where the focus is on performing all activities with a yoga attitude. Bhagavad Gita introduces various methods of anchoring the intelligence in the Self, such as Asangatva, Yajna bhava, Samatva, transcending gunas, and surrender.
Presenting the three-guna model, Sri Krishna says that no one is beyond the ken of the three gunas of Nature. These gunas are present in the human personality in varying degrees at different times. But there is a possibility of reshaping one’s guna constitution and even transcending the gunas.
Each guna causes bondage. Sattva guna leads to understanding, knowledge, and purity, but it also binds through clinging to sukha and jnana. Rajo guna leads to fragmented vision and preferential clinging and enhances greed and induces desire-motivated activities. Tamo guna leads to inattention, lethargy, and delusion.
A wise person conquers rajas and tamas by cultivating sattva guna and transcends Sattva guna bondage through non-expectation or surrender. Surrender means that he has no desire for anything, anytime, from anybody, from anywhere.
Wise people never get entangled by the gunas. They understand that Nature’s gunas (in the form of senses) are interacting with gunas (world objects) and hence do not cling to anything. Those who surrender to the Supreme Lord overcome the bondage of the gunas and attain Brahman.
