In this talk, Swami emphasizes Samatva Buddhi Yoga—the yoga of even-mindedness--maintaining equanimity toward life’s two alternating experiences: sukha and duḥkha. True mastery in life lies in equalizing the responses of the mind and integrating the senses, mind, and intelligence.
Bhagavad Gita reveals that yoga is not bodily postures but inner dexterity—maintaining balance amidst success and failure, gain and loss. When the mind attains Samatva, one transcends virtue and vice. Life’s perceptions and interactions arise, subsist, and dissolve within the mind. Thus, their impacts too can be assimilated and dissolved by the mind’s innate power. The seeker needs to assimilate only the subjective responses of the mind to all situations.
Samatva can be extended to every sphere of life. True equality extends to all beings—seeing the same consciousness in a Brahmin, cow, elephant, or a dog. One who makes a place in his mind for all kinds of people—benefactors, friends, enemies, indifferent people, mediators, haters, and relatives—he excels. One whose mind is established in Samatva, the entire creation is won over by him. Having attained Samatva, one perceives the Self as abiding in all beings, and all beings as dwelling in the Self.
Swamiji says that watchword of a seeker must be samabuddhi--a practice done in the intelligence level. The benefits of the equalness are instilled into the mind and the mind becomes flexible, assimilative, and pure.
