In this Satsang, Swamiji further elaborates on the buddhi yoga of Bhagavad Gita. Buddhi yoga is undergoing all activities and interactions with the intelligence anchored in the Self. Through buddhi yoga, a seeker can make all activities and interactions instruments to reach the spiritual goal.

The ‘Gunaateeta’ concept is one of the methods suggested by Bhagavad Gita to establish the buddhi in the Self. The three-guna model helps us understand the three gunas and their effect on the personality. It also helps us transcend the effects of the three gunas, and become a gunaateeta.

Sri Krishna says that the three gunas—sattva, rajas and tamas belong to Nature. These three gunas bind the mind and intelligence of man. Bhagavad Gita says that even the sattva guna, which brings about knowledge, and harmony, binds a seeker by sukha-sanga (clinging to the saatvika sukha) and jnana-sanga (clinging to wisdom).

When tamo guna—marked by inattention, sleep, and laziness—dominates the personality, one should consciously cultivate the rajasic and saatvic qualities. When rajo guna is prominent, the seeker must bring in more sattva. But when sattva itself becomes dominant, the only way to transcend it is through surrender.

A Gunaateeta is one who does not resent the dominance of any guna, nor does he yearn to be free of the grip of any guna. He remains in a transcendental state. He functions naturally, being free of the bondage of the gunas.
