Discussing shloka 6.32 of Bhagavad Gita, Swamiji speaks about the attitude and insight of a Yogi, a knower of Truth, who lives and interacts in the world. He understands that the essence of everything is the Self. He has a firm conviction that both sukha and duhkha subsist in the Self alone, the content in both is the same inner Self. Having an equal attitude to Sukha and duhkha, he becomes master of the world.
A Knower has an expansive spiritual vision, and insight. Neither does he invite misery, nor does he desire happiness. He is neither delighted by positive outcome of actions, nor is he tormented by challenging situations. He accepts and assimilates all impacts and does whatever external situations demand of him.
Scriptures emphasize that meditation or absorption is not sufficient to know the Self. The Self is extremely subtle and all-pervading. To understand it, great subtlety is required. True Knowledge is the understanding of the ‘I’, by Vichara Sadhana done by the intelligence. It is knowing: “I am the Self, which is unaffected, birthless, blissful, beyond sukha-duhkha, all-pervading, beyond the mind and mental impacts.”
Bhagavad Gita says that spirituality is not being inactive in meditation. It is an interactional sublimation and expansion. Sublimating all Raga-dvesha (attractions and repulsions), the Yogi lives and interacts with persons, places, and events and attains placidity of the mind. His mind becomes equal to sukha and Duhkha. Brahman is Sama (an equal presence in everything). So, when the Yogi’s mind is established in Saamya, his mind is really established in the Self.
