Gurupoornima Retreat 2025

In this series of talks during the Retreat, Swamiji discusses the text ‘Vijnaana Nauka’—which means, the boat of experiential knowledge’ that will take a seeker across the worldliness. Also called ‘Svarupanusandhanashtakam’, it is a set of eight verses which describe our own identity and how it can be realized. In each verse, the seeker introspects: “I am the Supreme Brahman, eternal, unchanging.”

Brahman is the ultimate Truth of the whole creation; It is who ‘I am’. Not knowing or realizing it, one undergoes suffering. The non-dual Truth is the Truth about our own real identity. A seeker can never discover the Atma as something different from himself. This knowledge is neither a sensory knowledge nor inferential knowledge, it is the direct knowledge of the Truth. When a seeker renounces everything to have the realization of his own real identity, the Atma reveals itself.

Discussing the first verse, Swamiji quotes from the Bhagavad Gita and says that Tapas (austerity), Yajna (sacrifices) and Dana (sharing or giving) are activities which are not to be renounced. Through the performance of such acts, the mind and intelligence of the performer become purified. The mind becomes expansive, free of ego and doership.
