Gurupoornima Rereat Sessions by Ma Gurupriya
In this series of talks of the Retreat, Ma speaks about the importance of cultivating Vairagya. In the world, all the objects of enjoyment are transitory. The absence of desire to enjoy them and the conviction that all these objects are insignificant, is Vairāgya.
A seeker must diligently undertake all duties and responsibilities in life, but he must be careful not to get attached to anything. Attachment only leads to suffering. When the mind is imbued with Vairagya, the mind feels free. Staying in the household, a seeker must cultivate and practice Vairagya (dispassion), which is getting rid of possessiveness, and clinging.
The text on dispassion- Vairagya Shatakam- repeatedly underlines the ephemerality of the world and the imperative need for dispassion to the world. It says that, for human beings, everything in the world is coupled with fear. Vairagya (non-possessiveness, non-clinging) alone bestows fearlessness.
Human mind is filled with desires. The text proclaims that those people who have numerous desires are indeed poor. Real wealth is had when the mind is contented. The text constantly speaks about how one should withdraw from all desires and dwell on the thought of the Self and be absorbed in the indwelling Lord. Ma urges the listeners to read, understand, introspect, and assimilate the verses of Vairagya Shatakam, which speak about intense dispassion.
