How to free the mind of distracting thoughts? In this talk, Swamiji explains how to train one’s own mind. People, normally, find that there are many distracting thoughts during meditation. Swamiji explains how to handle these distractions. For this, one must train one’s own mind, with persistent, consistent, undefeated, enthusiastic efforts.

The Mantra given by the Guru should be relentlessly applied to the distracted mind. By persistent effort, gradually the mind is tamed, and the optional thought (mantra) makes the distracting thoughts lesser and lesser, until it almost fades off. Gradually, the mind becomes calm, peaceful, joyous and reveals it’s sublimity.

There is no substitute for self-effort, for mental training. The exercise for the mind with the optional thought should be kept going regularly. Besides meditation, reading scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita and constantly filling the mind with divine, uplifting thoughts also keeps the mind free of distracting thoughts.
