247 – Karma Yoga and Buddhi Yoga of Bhagavad Gita 01 I Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

654 Views | 3 months ago

A series of Satsangs by Nutan Swamiji on the real Yoga aspect of Bhagavad Gita. Karma Yoga and Buddhi Yoga, as discussed in the Bhagavad Gita, emphasize performing actions without desire for personal gain. True fulfillment comes from understanding our universal identity, transcending the limitations of desire. The teachings encourage using every action as a means for liberation, promoting a mindset of impartiality and selflessness.

In this Satsang, Swamiji speaks about Karma Yoga (or buddhi yoga) of the Bhagavad Gita, where the focus is not on the action itself, but on the attitude of the mind while performing the action. Most people act with desire-motivation (seeking happiness through external gains). Such actions (karmas) bind the performer with alternating joy (sukha) and sorrow (duhkha). But when the mind is anchored in the yoga attitude, actions become liberating rather than binding.

Bhagavad Gita urges a seeker to do all activities with a Yoga attitude. When karma is done not motivated by desires but with a Yoga attitude, it becomes Karma Yoga. It is Buddhi yoga or Karma yoga when one takes refuge in yoga buddhi, in and through all activities. In this process, it is
necessary for the understanding of the intelligence to undergo a transformation, where it blossoms with the yoga bhava, universal bhava.

The Gita was delivered in a battlefield, unlike the Upanishads or other scriptures taught in serene settings. Krishna’s message to Arjuna was revolutionary. He urged him to perform his duty (fight), with the right mindset. Arjuna was encouraged to develop an impersonality, expansive vision and fight.

Bhagavad Gita exhorts us not to abandon activities, but to make actions instruments for purifying the mind, which leads to liberation. Since the Bhagavad Gita Sadhana is to perform all activities with a Yoga attitude, it does not need any separate time allocation for the spiritual pursuit. It is a wholesome, all-time sadhana.
