In this Satsang, Swamiji begins the discussion of Bhrigu Valli, which is the concluding section of Taittiriya Upanishad. In this segment, the Upanishad emphasizes that Tapasya (austerity) is indispensable for a seeker of the Ultimate Truth. Tapasya is when the mind and the senses become one-pointed towards a desired goal.

The Upanishad speaks of an interaction between Varuna and his son Bhrigu (a spiritual aspirant). Bhrigu approached his father with humility and sought Brahmavidya. Varuna replied that seekers must do the Sadhana and have the direct experience of the Truth, by their own austerity. He instructed Bhrigu to introspect on the objectude, vital forces, vision, hearing, mind and speech and look for their source and substratum. He asked him to enquire deeply about that from which all beings are born, where everything subsists and everything finally gets merged.

Having done the Tapasya, Bhrigu approached Varuna and said that he had come to know that Annam (objectude) is Brahman. But he still was not free of doubt—how could Brahman be the changeful objectude? Varuna again asked him to pursue wholesome, one-pointed austerity, and know that Tapas itself is Brahman. After Tapasya, Bhrigu told Varuna that he had come to know that Prana is Brahman and everything is born, subsisting and getting dissolved in Prana.

Varuna, the Guru, had a strength and conviction of knowledge and sent Bhrigu again to do further Tapasya. After further austerity, Bhrigu came to know the Mind as Brahman, and later Vijnana as Brahman. Each time, the realization was of a subtler and higher dimension. The identity was shifting from the gross to the subtler levels. He then came to know that Ananda is Brahman, and that everything is born of Ananda, subsisting in Ananda and getting dissolved in Ananda.
