In this Satsang, Swamiji discusses the instructions and guidance given by Sri Krishna to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita gospel, and to Uddhava in Srimad Bhagavatam. The advice given by Sri Krishna in both cases was different, depending on the circumstances, the needs of the recipients, and the need of the hour.

In Upanishadic Sadhana, the seeker takes to exclusive knowledge pursuit, where the focus is study, introspection, meditation and enquiring about the Truth. But most people are not fit for this exclusive pursuit. As an alternative, Bhagavad Gita presents a pursuit, which can be practiced by everybody, at any stage of life, pursuing any activity in life.

The goal of meditation is to have a direct experience of the Self. Bhagavad Gita says that the goal of meditation must become the goal of active and interactive life also. Cultivating the parameters of the Atma—unaffectedness, detachment, impartiality, universality, fearlessness etc., the seeker must leave all selfishness and replace it with a universal dimension.

Arjuna, the courageous warrior, needed to fight the war to establish a righteous rule on earth, and to save the society from decline and ruin. So, Sri Krishna advised him to follow the path of Buddhi Yoga and fight. He needed to fight the gory war by adhering to Buddhi Yoga, with his intelligence anchored in the Self, with an expanded mindset.

In the Srimad Bhagavatam, Uddhava, the aged friend and minister of Sri Krishna, confessed that he had attachment, and possessiveness. To such an Uddhava, Sri Krishna’s advise was completely different. He instructed Uddhava to go to Badarikashrama and immerse himself in Bhakti. He asked him to leave all attachment, and fix the mind on the Lord.
