Many external mudras and asanas are practiced in the name of Yoga. That is a preliminary practice. Shankaracharya, in his Aparokshanubhutih, has outlined the inner Yoga practices, by giving 15 essential elements for a seeker to practice and perfect. In this Satsang, Swamiji continues to explain the verses of the text which are meant to enlighten the mind and intelligence.
Contemplating on the Consciousness, which is the source of all activity, is moola bandana. A seeker must understand that Samata is being steady on the realization that everything is resting on Brahman, not just having an erect physical posture. Seeing and realizing that the world is Brahmamaya (an extension and expression of the sentience), is the most noble insight and vision, not just focusing on the tip of the nose.
Pranayama is not about disciplining the breathing process. Real Pranayama is sublimating all modifications of the mind and remaining still and calm. Rechaka and Pooraka are not just inhalation and exhalation of breath. Rechaka is when one understands that everything is a display and extension of the Consciousness and negates the world. The thought: “I am Brahman” is Pooraka. When all the modifications of the mind are still, that is the real inner Kumbhaka (inner fullness).
Dharana is when the mind perceives Brahman and is steady on the knowledge, wherever it goes. When the body identification dissolves, when the fullness and comprehensiveness of the Self is understood, then wherever the mind goes, it is Samadhi. When the mind is established on the thought “I am Brahman”, it is free and steady and it gives rise to bliss. This is Dhyana or meditation.
Swamiji highlights the point that when the mind and intelligence are united with the Self, that is the process and the goal of Yoga.
